Don’t Let Your Health "Fall" Off Track
Have you noticed how your body feels different in the fall compared to summer?
As the seasons change, its not just the weather that changes.
With less daylight, our circadian rhythm starts to shift, meaning an earlier melatonin release, changes in serotonin levels, and often disrupted sleep patterns.
And when we layer on the realities of this season (kids going back in school, holiday planning right around the corner, work deadlines stacking, etc.), it should come as no surprise that many of us feel a drop in energy, leading to a lack of consistency in our routines.
Basically: It's dark, we're tired, and it feels like a really big bowl of pasta will fix us right up.
And there is nothing wrong with feeling this way. Your body is simply adapting to a seasonal shift. And instead of fighting it, you can use it to your advantage.
Here are a handful of ways to channel that fall energy shift into something that actually supports your health instead of derails it:
Take advantage of cooler weather. Outdoor walks, hikes, or runs become more enjoyable when it’s not scorching hot. Fresh air and sunlight can help boost mood and energy as the days shorten.
Lean into structure. Fall is naturally more routine-oriented than summer. Use that to your advantage and set specific workout times, prep meals ahead, and let your calendar work for you.
Shift your fuel. Cooler temps call for warmer, grounding foods. Soups, stews, roasted veggies, and slow-cooker meals can feel comforting while also nourishing your body and supporting your goals.
Embrace seasonal produce. Speaking of fuel, consider shifting your ingredients. Pumpkins, squash, apples, sweet potatoes, and root vegetables are all highly nutrient-dense, versatile and delicious, and they are coming into season!
Honor your energy. If you notice you’re naturally winding down earlier, don’t fight it… work with it. Try to improve your sleep hygiene, and schedule your most demanding workouts or tasks earlier in the day when you have more bandwidth.
Fall is a natural time to check in with yourself, refine your habits, and find clarity on how you want to finish the year.
So instead of resisting the change, use it as a reset button, and lean in.
